What India was in 1835?

This one came to me as a forwaded message from one of my colleague. I felt that I should keep it here to so that everyone knows about it.

Is it changed even now. We have realized that we are independent and bound to no one. But we are still attracted towards the foreign things like education, any electronic or mechanical devices, employment, etc. for the sake of money and wealthy lifestyle. We are still dependent on foreign nations for innovative things. Why?
